How astr matches you: three charts, one score

Almost every "astrology dating" product does the same thing: it asks for your Sun sign and matches you against a lookup table of which signs are supposed to get along. It is fast, it is cheap to build, and it is shallow in a specific, fixable way. Your Sun sign is one variable. Reducing an entire person to it is like sorting daters by their favorite color and calling it chemistry.

astr does something less tidy but more honest. Every match is read across three independent axes, each drawn from a different system, and only then rolled into a single score. Here is what each axis is actually measuring.

Axis one: Sun sign — what you project

Your Sun sign is the identity you broadcast. It is the version of you that walks into a room, the tone you set, the thing people notice first. This is the layer that traditional matching stops at, and it genuinely matters — but as identity, not as destiny. astr reads it through element (fire, earth, air, water) and modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable), which is a far more useful lens than the sign name alone. Two fire signs share a tempo; a fixed sign and a mutable sign negotiate change very differently. That texture is invisible if all you compare is "Leo vs. Scorpio."

Axis two: Life Path number — how you operate

Your Life Path number comes from numerology, reduced from your full birth date. Strip the mysticism off and it describes something Sun signs do not: your default operating mode — how you make decisions and move through the world when no one is performing for anyone. You can share a Sun sign with someone and clash hard here. A person who leads by building slow systems and a person who leads by improvising will feel the difference within a week, no matter how well their Sun signs are "supposed" to match.

This is the axis that catches the mismatches sun-sign matching misses entirely, and it is why two people who look incompatible on paper sometimes click on tempo alone.

Axis three: Chinese zodiac — your default posture

Your Chinese zodiac animal and its element describe reaction speed and the relational posture you fall into first — how quickly you engage, how you hold conflict, whether your instinct is to push or to wait. astr uses the real structure here, not just the animal cartoon: the affinity and clash triangles that group the twelve animals, plus the element layered on top. It is the fastest-moving of the three axes, the one that governs the first few minutes rather than the long arc.

Why three axes instead of one

Because they are genuinely independent, and independence is the whole point. Sometimes all three reinforce each other and you get the rare, obvious, fast click. Sometimes they cancel out — a strong Sun match sitting on top of a Life Path clash — and the relationship becomes a thing you build on purpose rather than one that runs on autopilot. Sometimes they produce the interesting tension that a lot of people actually want: easy in one register, effortful in another.

A single-axis system literally cannot represent any of that. It has one number to say one thing. Three axes give you a shape, and a shape is what a relationship actually is.

The score is a synthesis, not an average

astr collapses the three reads into one compatibility score out of 100, backed by real logic on each axis — element and modality for the zodiac, harmony for the numerology, affinity and clash for the Chinese animals. But the number is never presented alone. Every match shows the read across all three axes so you can see where the score comes from. A 60 that is high on tempo and low on identity is a completely different relationship than a 60 that is the reverse, and you deserve to know which one you are looking at.

That is the entire design philosophy: give you a map, not a verdict. The three axes tell you what kind of work a connection will ask for. The score tells you roughly how much. Neither one tells you whether to fall in love — that part is still yours.
