Life Path numerology, actually explained

Numerology sounds like something you'd see printed on a mystical candle. Fair. But once you strip the marketing off, the Life Path number is a genuinely useful heuristic — a compact way to describe how someone tends to move through decisions when nobody is watching.

How the number is computed

Add the digits of your full birth date together, then reduce until you get a single digit (1–9) or a "master number" (11, 22, 33). Example: 1990-05-12 → 1+9+9+0+0+5+1+2 = 27 → 2+7 = 9. Life Path 9. That's it. No occult apparatus required.

You'll sometimes see people insist on a specific reduction order — reducing month, day, year separately then combining. In practice both methods agree ~99% of the time. Where they disagree is exactly where you'd hit a master number, and those are worth preserving.

What each number actually describes

Not the "fortune" version. Think of it as a default operating mode — what someone falls back to under pressure, when the performative layer drops off.

• 2 — Diplomat / connector. Reads a room fast. Under-values own preferences.
• 3 — Expressive. Ideas out loud. Scatters when overwhelmed.

• 6 — Nurturer / responsible one. Family-of-origin dynamics loud.

Why we weight this in compatibility

Numerology and Western astrology describe different axes. Sun describes the identity you project. Life Path describes the operating mode you fall back to. Two people can share a Sun sign and clash on Life Path — a Leo 1 and a Leo 6 will fight over who gets to be the sun in the room. Conversely, a Cancer 3 and a Capricorn 3 will surprise everyone by clicking, because their underlying tempo matches even though their Sun archetypes look opposed.
