Your Sun sign is a mask. Here's what's underneath.
Popular astrology stops at Sun sign. Real chart reading starts with the interplay of Sun, Moon, Rising — the mask, the interior, and the door people walk through.
Almost every conversation about astrology starts with "what's your sign?" — and stops there. That question is asking about your Sun sign, computed from your birth date alone. It's the astrological equivalent of introducing someone by their first name and calling that a full portrait.
The mask vs. the interior
In a natal chart, your Sun describes the core role you're here to play — the identity you consciously project. But it sits inside a much wider system. Two others do most of the interpersonal heavy lifting: your Moon (emotional interior, what you need privately to feel okay) and your Rising (the door people walk through when they meet you — the first ~15 minutes of any first impression).
The reason two Leos can feel completely different in the room isn't that astrology is fake. It's that one might be Leo Sun with Cancer Moon and Virgo Rising — Leo warmth wrapped in a soft interior that walks in slightly reserved. The other is Leo Sun / Aries Moon / Sag Rising — a bonfire from the doorway.
Why dating apps get this wrong
"Compatibility" features on most dating apps use Sun-only tables pulled from a magazine. You end up with the same reductive verdicts everyone has already heard ("Scorpio and Aquarius don't work"), which is roughly as useful as saying "tall people don't work with short people." Chart chemistry lives in the interactions between all threepillars, plus outer-planet aspects — that's where the interesting texture is.
In astr, when we score a match we're not just comparing Suns. Sun × Sun contributes about a third. The rest is Life Path (numerology), Chinese animal/element, plus a small weight for Rising when both birth times are known. That's why you'll see a Cancer / Capricorn pairing score 89 sometimes — the "opposite signs" cliché breaks down the second you look at the full picture.
What to do with this
Two suggestions. First: when you enter your chart in Settings, use your exactbirth time. It's not decorative — it's what unlocks Rising and House positions, which sharpen every downstream reading. Second: stop reading Sun-only horoscopes. They're optimizing for a completely different denominator than yours.
Your Sun sign is the trailer. The chart is the film.
