What your compatibility score actually means
A 72 is not a rejection and a 94 is not a guarantee. Here's how to read astr's 0-100 compatibility score as what it is: a map of where the effort goes, not a verdict you're stuck with.
People see a number out of 100 and immediately reach for a grade. Ninety is an A, seventy-two is a C-minus, and a C-minus person is someone you swipe past. That instinct is understandable and it is completely wrong for this number. The compatibility score is not a grade on the relationship. It is a measurement of how a relationship will behave — and a 72 behaves very differently from a rejection.
What the number is actually made of
The score is backed by real logic across the same three axes every match is read on. Element and modality drive the zodiac component. Numerological harmony drives the Life Path component. The affinity and clash triangles drive the Chinese zodiac component. Those get synthesized into one 0-100 figure. So the number is not a mood or a guess — it is the compression of three structural reads into a single summary.
Which also means the number alone is lossy on purpose. Two matches can both score 68 and be nothing alike: one easy on identity and hard on tempo, the other the reverse. That is why the score never travels alone — the full three-axis read sits right next to it so you can see the shape underneath the summary.
How to read the bands
Roughly, and without pretending the boundaries are sharp:
- A high score means a fast, deep click. The axes reinforce each other, so a lot of the connection runs on its own. Easy is not the same as good, and easy relationships fail all the time — but the initial pull is real and low-effort.
- A mid score means it works with intention. Some registers cooperate and some do not, so the relationship rewards being deliberate about the parts that do not. This is not a warning. Plenty of the best pairings live here.
- A lower score means the axes mostly pull in different directions. More friction, more translation required. Some people specifically want that texture; most want to at least know it is coming.
Why a 72 is not a rejection
Because "works with intention" is a description of most durable relationships, not a disqualification. A 72 is telling you there is a real connection here and there is a specific place the effort needs to go. That is more actionable than a 94, which often tells you so little precisely because everything is easy. The mid scores are where the score is doing its most useful work: pointing at the exact axis that will ask something of you.
Treating a 72 as a no means throwing away a map because you did not like that it showed a hill. The hill is on the terrain whether the map shows it or not. Better to know where it is.
It is a map, not a verdict
This is the framing that makes the whole number usable. The score does not tell you whether this works out — it tells you where to spend your attention if you want it to. A high score says "you can coast on these axes, so do not get lazy on the rest." A mid score says "here is the seam; sew it on purpose." Neither is a prophecy, and you are not stuck with either one, because the effort the score points at is exactly the effort you get to choose to make.
So use the number the way it is meant to be used. Let it tell you what kind of relationship you are looking at and roughly how much work it will ask for. Then decide, like an adult, whether that is the work you want to do. The score is the most honest thing astr can hand you: not an answer, but a very good question.
